Team Fitness is the only program I know that puts all the elements of fitness together.
There are gym programs that focus on weight lifting or flexibility or aerobic work. There are other training programs or clubs that specialize for a particular sport or event or race or even a specific skill set. What Team Fitness has done, and done successfully for over twenty years now, is bring all the elements of Fitness together into one hour classes.
Weights for strength and power; walking to sprinting for endurance, speed, and metabolic change; stretching for flexibility; skills for coordination, balance, and precision; sport and games to bring it all together.
BY MY DEFINITION OF FITNESS
- You are fit if you can scramble up a ladder in the garage and unload a heavy box onto an upper shelf and do it all with agility, balance, and power.
- You are fit if you can run or bike a mile or more into town quickly and easily with endurance, or speed, or both.
- You are fit when you get an invitation to hike, play a sport, body surf, kayak, climb stairs, or even throw darts and you can accomplish it all with ease and fun.
However, ‘IF” our program is and does only that, it misses the essential element of time. Six weeks, six months, or even six years is too short.
THE OPTIMAL ENVIRONMENT FOR SUCCESSFUL FITNESS
To have Successful Fitness, a program must create the environment that causes members to remain fit for decades.
Well designed classes, well proportioned class sizes, quality coaches and members, and a whole lot of fun. Welcome to Team Fitness.”
THE BACKGROUND AND HOW I STARTED TEAM FITNESS
I have always loved sport, more accurately, I have always loved playing any sport. In high school, in Los Angeles, I did well enough to get a look by Stanford to come and play baseball. While at Stanford I played on several teams, and it was a true joy to play. In 1977 I finished my collegiate career on the Stanford Rugby team and married my college sweetheart later that year. By 1986 we had three terrific kids, an eight year old custom home construction company, and my first opportunity to coach. I haven’t stopped coaching since. I’ve had the fun and enjoyment of coaching 5 year olds to 79 year olds, from T-ball to Varsity Baseball and Softball, as well as launching and training a number of collegiate athletes.
Team Fitness actually started May 6, 1991. I attended my first workout with Team Fitness in 1996. Within 30 minutes I knew that this was the greatest, most fun workout I’d ever experienced. Despite a huge array of recreational and competitive sports experiences, I’d never seen the range of training or felt the elation of having so much fun, while working so hard, in just a one hour workout. We lifted weights, we power walked and sprinted, we jumped rope, caught footballs, did abs, worked agilities, and played indoor soccer, and it all got done in an hour. Amazing.
In 1997 I joined Team fitness as a coach early in the launching of our corporate fitness programs which included both an onsite fitness program and offsite leadership development programs. In 1999 I sold my construction business and opened our second Team Fitness community program site in Sunnyvale. In 2002, I became a junior partner, and then the outright owner in 2005. During that time period I opened our two current Los Altos locations and our Denver location.
Some one recently asked me how I made the move from construction to fitness, it seemed like such an unlikely move. The answer has been the same for a long time now, “For many years I built things, now I get to build people.”
